Our Story

Evalue8 Sustainability’s History

Evalue8 Sustainability (Evalue8) was founded in 2019 with the mission of transforming organisations for a net-zero future.

We deliver on this mission by empowering organisations to lower their carbon emissions and energy costs and demonstrate their progress. Our application tracks your carbon emissions via your business accounting software and many other data sources and then recommends reduction opportunities.

Our founder, Ilea Buffier, is an experienced business leader and director known for combining profitability with sustainability. She has been passionate about utilising the power of business to address climate change since the early 2000s. She started out as an investor in Carbon Planet in 2006 and started a Canberra office. This company developed software to measure greenhouse gas emissions but ceased trading following the repeal of the carbon price in Australia after the Global Financial Crisis.

Ilea also owned Ninetwofive Interiors and experienced first-hand how time-consuming and costly it is to undertake carbon accounting and implement carbon footprint reduction measures.

Ilea came to the realisation that businesses needed a better way of tracking their emissions, at a much lower cost, to make mobilising the business community to fight climate change feasible.

Ilea purchased Carbon Planet’s software in May 2019, registered Evalue8 as a company in June 2019, and began recruiting programmers in July 2019. That year Evalue8 won an Innovation Grant from the ACT Government, was accepted into the Griffin Accelerator program, and raised its first round of capital.

While this software has since been extensively rewritten, it codified the World Business Council for Sustainable Development and World Resources Institute’s Greenhouse Gas Protocol and the Global Reporting Initiative’s Sustainability Reporting Guidelines, shortening the development time to develop the software currently provided by Evalue8 and providing a broad base of coverage that Evalue8 has continued to build on.

In October 2020, Evalue8 was chosen by Microsoft as one of 20 apps worldwide to be profiled as part of their #Buildfor2030 campaign, representing Sustainability Development Goal #13 on Climate Action. Our app was added to the Microsoft App Source marketplace.

Evalue8 was awarded the Corporate Vision 2021 Small Business Award: Best Zero Carbon Consultancy Business, Australia in December 2021 and Best Carbon Accounting Solution 2022 (Australian Enterprise Award) in February 2022.

What’s next for Evalue8?

At present our software is suitable for use in Australia. We will be redeveloping it to make it fit for use in more locations, available in multiple languages, and support the calculation of greenhouse gas emissions of whole supply chains. We will be listening to our customers about what features they need most in their journeys to net-zero.
