Why measure the greenhouse gas emissions of your business?
You can’t manage what you don’t measure. If you don’t know how the activities of your business contribute to greenhouse gas emissions, you don’t know which ones to focus on, or which initiatives to invest in to reduce your impact. In the absence of proper measurement, the best you can do to reduce your impact is make a few broad guesses based on the average greenhouse gas emissions of a business of your size and industry, and buy some carbon offsets based on that to try to become carbon neutral. While this is still better than doing nothing, the best way of helping the planet is to ensure less greenhouse gas emissions occur in the first place, rather than trying to compensate for them.
Measurement shows your board and managers if your emission reduction strategies are working, and demonstrates to your shareholders, staff, buyers, suppliers and government that your business is becoming cleaner and greener. As more people become aware of the need to act faster on climate change, they are voting for action with their wallets, and looking for evidence on which to base their choices.
You can, of course, try to measure your emissions on your own. However, it is a complex business which requires keeping up to date with evolving international standards.
There is an easier way. Evalue8 Sustainability produces software that helps you measure your emissions and determine if your efforts to reduce them over time are working, letting you focus on your core business.
